Plan and Facilitate Change Efforts

Convening Issues:

An aircraft engine overhaul facility was formed as a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney and Singapor Airlines. A clash of cultures began to emerge as the expatriate managers attempted to implement far reaching changes to improve productivity, workplace safety, and quality. The managers needed to gain the support of the workforce and the local union officials to implement the changes and improve business performance.

What We Did:

Pda partners, working with the General Manager and the HR Manager, conducted a series of meeting to align the leadership team on a strategic plan for the joint venture and a change roadmap to implement the needed changes. As the first step in that process, PDA consultants worked with a cross functional team from across the organization to design a communications process that would gather input from the employees and engage them in defining the future of the new organization. This process culminated in a large group meeting in which one third of the plant met (275 people) to explore the current state of the business, define customer requirements, define a new vision for the joint venture and create action plans to make it real. In addition, PDA worked with ESA to follow up and implement the results of the meeting.

Results:

A union-management dialogue on building a profitable business was established. Active support from the workforce was achieved for the accelerted implementation of the stalled initiatives. Working relationships between the expatriate American managers and the Singaporean counterparts were improved.
